This year's European Football Championship was overshadowed by an event that can affect us all and which no one could have foreseen - the sudden cardiac arrest of the Danish Ericson in the match against Finland. However, this event managed to draw attention around the world to the importance of early resuscitation by first responders, which, according to all experts, often makes the difference between survival and death.
A study by the German Resuscitation Council (GRC) found that of the approximately 70,000 pre-hospital cardiac arrests that occur each year, pre-hospital resuscitation efforts were only carried out in approximately 28,000 cases. This probably results in tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths and cases of severe disability.
The Academy of Health Berlin/Brandenburg eV takes this finding very seriously and will make a contribution to improving the lay resuscitation rate in the Barnim district on the occasion of “World Restart a Heart Day” on October 16, 2021.
On this day, the students of the School for Emergency Medical Technicians at the Eberswalde Campus will meet on the Eberswalde market square from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
- Inform passers-by about the need for first aid,
- raise awareness of the issue of resuscitation,
- train in the performance of first aid resuscitation and in making the emergency call,
- strengthen them in any knowledge they may already have and
- inform about the steps of an emergency response.
In addition to the information, interested parties can try out small resuscitation exercises on dummies and thus have the opportunity to practice their actions in realistic situations. The Academy of Health will receive support on this day from the Barnim rescue service and the Northeast regional control center, who will provide support with expertise and demonstrations on the day of the event.
As part of the interprofessional cooperation between the different professions, the nursing school students will use this day to inform local citizens
- Explain the prevention of heart disease and
- For additional safety, citizens will be checked for blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
