Emergency paramedics work independently as part of a team to provide emergency medical care and transport patients in ambulances. They are able to monitor vital functions, determine the extent of the illness or injury and carry out measures to ensure vital functions. They are also allowed to carry out selected invasive measures independently (e.g. injecting medication, defibrillating). If their measures are not sufficient, they assist the emergency doctor. The area of activity as an emergency paramedic relates to both the rescue service and the central emergency room in the hospital.
The aim of the vocational training is to enable the independent execution of:
- Determining and recording the situation at the site and immediately initiating the necessary measures to avert danger,
- Assessment of the health status of sick and injured persons, especially in the detection of vital and psychological threats,
- Implementation of medical first aid measures,
- Making the patient fit for transport and monitoring him/her during transport,
- interdisciplinary teamwork.
