Knowledge test for
nursing professional

The knowledge test is a state examination that is carried out by the Academy of Health as a state-recognized training center for nursing professionals on behalf of the responsible state authorities. The knowledge test is carried out on the basis of the Training and Examination Ordinance for Nursing Professions (KrPflAPrV).

The knowledge test to become a nursing professional is currently being prepared or designed and will be offered from 2023 at the latest, at the end of the transition period.

The knowledge test is aimed at nursing professionals from non-EU countries and non-European countries who would like to take the knowledge test to recognize the equivalence of their training as a health and nursing professional for the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg and who already have a corresponding notice or authorization to take the knowledge test in the aforementioned federal states.

When registering for the knowledge test, please submit the following documents:

  • Proof of German language skills at least at level B2
  • Notice from the responsible state office to carry out the knowledge test
  • Residence permit / work permit
  • Short CV

The knowledge test includes an oral and practical part, which can be repeated once if the test is not passed.

  1. Oral part of the knowledge test

The oral examination is carried out by an examination board in accordance with Section 20b KrPflAPrV. An examination interview is held on the basis of selected case situations.

  1. Practical part of the knowledge test

The practical examination (KrPflAPrV §20a para. 3) is usually carried out in the employer's facility or in an inpatient, day-care or outpatient facility.

A qualified medical educator from the Academy of Health and a specialist examiner who works in the facility as a practical instructor in accordance with Section 2 Paragraph 2 Sentence 2 KrPflAPrV will conduct the practical examination.

The Academy of Health carries out the knowledge test on behalf of the responsible state office and sends the relevant test results to it. The state office is then responsible for issuing the professional license.
