Under this motto, a panel discussion took place on August 20, 2020, focusing on rheumatoid arthritis/psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis and Lyme disease.
Experts from medicine and therapy were invited to answer questions and to talk to those affected, who could address their questions and problems to them. During the panel discussion, the experts answered all of the patients' questions about the course of the disease, therapy methods, prognoses, prophylaxis and medication.
One of the topics discussed was exercise therapy. Even though every movement is painful, exercise therapy is an important part of treating rheumatism because it prevents the movement restriction from progressing.
Self-help groups can provide useful tips on how to deal with the situation and what types of therapy are available.
A healthy diet is becoming more and more of a focus. For rheumatism, a lacto-vegetarian diet is recommended, but meat and eggs should not be completely eliminated. The right ratio between the "bad" fatty acids arachidonic acids and the "good" omega-3 fatty acids is important. For inflammatory rheumatic diseases, one should not consume too much arachidonic acid through food. Arachidonic acid forms inflammatory messengers and these substances promote inflammation of the joints.
It is recommended to avoid or stop bad habits such as smoking or drinking alcohol.
Occupational therapists can provide helpful support to patients with rheumatism. With the help of occupational therapy, you can learn how to protect your joints and avoid harmful behavior or protective postures in everyday life.
Thank you to everyone who participated!
