Further training concept for practical instructors of the rescue service in the Oder-Spree district GmbH
revised by Olaf Schoenborn, in close cooperation with Thomas Leuendorff, Academy of Health Berlin/Brandenburg eV, Campus Bad Saarow

Since September 1, 2021, Olaf Schoenborn has been working for training, further education and continuing education in the rescue service in the Oder-Spree district GmbH. To date, he has visited 16 rescue stations and introduced himself to the majority of the 250 colleagues. He was able to gain an overview that left him very positive overall. The attitude to daily work, the personal idealism and also the modern equipment that he saw convinced him. Anyone who works with and for people, such as in the rescue service, knows that they always have to face new challenges. It is particularly important to recognize situations that arise suddenly, to react appropriately and to make responsible decisions. This allows errors to be identified early and avoided.

This makes it all the more important to offer employees ongoing training that accompanies their practice and deepens their experience, just as doctors and teachers also receive.

For this reason, he has developed a concept for training and simulation opportunities in the rescue service in the Oder-Spree district GmbH for 2022.

This is about:

  • a debriefing in emergency service training
  • professional development of employees through self-reflective behavior
  • a positive attitude towards the expanded care measures
  • the review with the help of an actively lived error culture
  • a real simulation of an operational situation
  • a rescue service quality management in the rescue service in the Oder-Spree district GmbH

The procedure is explained below and some concrete examples are given for illustration:

All 31 practical instructors of the rescue service in the Oder-Spree district GmbH will be trained in the newly developed concept by March 2022. Thomas Leuendorff, from the Academy of Health Berlin/Brandenburg eV at the Bad Saarow campus, school for emergency paramedics, is accompanying this process. He is the right man because of his Master of Education degree and the scientific study he has to do for his master's thesis "Improving quality through a standardized debriefing structure in medical simulation training". Over the course of the year, the concept is taught to the training participants in practice and implemented at the rescue stations.

This implementation is based on practical training units in the individual guard areas, but also as a structure for debriefing real operations that have been carried out. The aim of this training is to enable the practical instructors to simulate operational scenarios and practice them with their training participants. They learn the skills and abilities for this during our course.

The main focus, however, is on the debriefing of these simulated operations, because during the exercise itself the participants cannot reflect on their actions. The instructors need time, peace and, above all, an effective questioning technique. Only by becoming aware of and justifying the decisions made can the self-reflection of the training participant begin and the actual learning effect comes into effect. This form is also described as hermeneutic case competence. This links the theoretical knowledge learned with individual cases from practice. The training participants learn to apply the universal knowledge we have taught to the individual emergency situations appropriately. This form of learning is implemented and lived at the Academy of Health Berlin/Brandenburg eV.

The Academy of Health, as the Oder-Spree district's educational partner in the field of emergency services, is pleased to be able to further advance the project for the training of our joint educational participants and to deepen the cooperation between schools and practice. This ensures an effective transfer of theory and practice and has the goal of providing the Oder-Spree district with well-trained emergency services personnel to care for the population.

Further education thrives on the mutual give and take of all participants.
