On February 14, 2023, the updated S3 guideline on polytrauma was published, which aims to improve the treatment of patients with severe injuries. The guideline was developed by an interdisciplinary group of experts and contains recommendations for the diagnosis, treatment and aftercare of polytrauma patients.

Polytrauma refers to injuries that affect several parts of the body and are life-threatening overall. The guideline emphasizes the importance of rapid and accurate diagnosis as well as coordinated and interdisciplinary treatment. The recommendations also include specific measures to prevent complications and for rehabilitation after acute treatment.

The guideline has been comprehensively updated and takes into account the latest findings in polytrauma research and international research results.

"The polytrauma guideline enables quick and careful action in time-critical emergency situations. We are pursuing the best possible chance of survival for our patients and the goal of healing them as completely as possible," said DGU President Prof. Dr. Steffen Ruchholtz, Managing Director of the Center for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery, University Hospital Gießen and Marburg GmbH in a press release on the publication. Doctors throughout Germany can immediately download the guideline from the website of the Association of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF).

The S3 guideline on polytrauma is an important resource for professionals in emergency medicine, trauma surgery and other areas that deal with the care of polytrauma patients. Implementing the recommendations in the guideline will help to optimize the treatment of polytrauma patients and improve outcomes for the affected patients. Our teachers will now implement these new findings and recommendations for action in teaching situations in order to lay the foundation for ideal patient care as part of the training of future specialists.
