The advanced training course “Nursing in Oncology” at the Academy of Health eV strengthens your professional, communicative and psychosocial competence.

They learn to provide professional, empathetic and safe support to people with cancer and their families and loved ones – from diagnosis to the palliative phase.

In our simulation area, you will practice complex care situations in a realistic setting: conducting conversations under pressure, crisis management, and interprofessional collaboration. The proven Crew Resource Management (CRM) concept promotes team communication, decision-making skills, and confidence in action – even under pressure.

Further training for practical instructors
  • Authorization to use the professional title of Registered Nurse (Health & (Pediatric) Nurse, Geriatric Nurse, (Pediatric) Nurse, Nursing Specialist
  • At least 6 months of experience in oncological nursing

Theoretical part (760 hours incl. exam)

  • Basic module (e-learning supported): Initiate and shape developments with justification
  • Subject Module 1: Theory-based nursing in the oncology field
  • Subject Module 2: To work as a nurse in the oncology field
  • Subject Module 3: To provide communicative care in the oncology field
  • Subject Module 4: Responsibly shaping processes and networks
  • Subject Module 5: Participate in oncological diagnostics and therapy
  • Module 6: Palliative care

Practical part (1800 hours, 300 hours each to be distributed among three of the following areas)

  • Minimum 500 hours of internal oncology training (including at least 1 placement in inpatient care and 1 placement in outpatient care)
  • Minimum 500 hours of surgical oncology (minimum 2 different areas of application, e.g., gynecology, urology…)
  • Minimum 250 hours of radiotherapy treatment units (inpatient or radiology practice)
  • Minimum 250 hours of radiotherapy treatment units (inpatient or radiology practice)
  • At least 250 hours of palliative care (palliative care unit, hospice, specialized outpatient palliative care)
  • Minimum 300 hours of elective duty (including 2 deployments in areas of age-appropriate specialized care, e.g. (pediatric) bone marrow transplantation unit, oncological rehabilitation)

The advanced training course “Nursing in Oncology” prepares The program prepares participants to confidently, competently, and empathetically meet the complex demands of oncological care. The focus is on developing a professional repertoire of actions based on current nursing science, medical, and psychosocial findings. The goal is to sustainably strengthen professional, social, personal, and methodological competencies – particularly in dealing with people with cancer and their families and caregivers. Participants learn to design care situations based on sound professional principles, actively participate in interprofessional processes, and act reflectively and compassionately even in challenging moments.

Concept

The further training takes place as a part-time course. It lasts at least two to a maximum of four years and is carried out on the basis of the currently valid DKG recommendation.

The theoretical training takes place in basic and specialist modules as block teaching units as well as in the form of individual, self-directed and digitally supported learning.

The practical part of the training is completed in the respective company or in a cooperation institution. Qualified practical instructors will accompany you and carry out planned instructions.

  • Since 01.01.2026, the Academy of Health has been recognized by the German Hospital Association as a continuing education center for continuing education in nursing in oncology
  • After successful oral and practical examination, you will receive the following qualification:
    • Specialist nurse / specialist nurse for nursing in oncology (DKG)
    • Specialist nurse for oncology nursing (DKG)
    • Specialist pediatric nurse / specialist pediatric nurse for nursing in oncology (DKG)
    • Specialist health and pediatric nurse for nursing in oncology (DKG)
    • Nursing professional (DKG)
    • Specialist geriatric nurse for oncology nursing (DKG)
  • Certificate from the DKG and the Academy of Health eV
  • Certificate for the basic course in Palliative Care completed in Module 6

The training comprises 760 seminar units.
